The Sword of Blood is the author's second novel, written in 1956. The real protagonist of The Sword of Blood is actually Yuan Chonghuan, followed by Golden Snake Langjun, two characters who do not officially appear in the book. Yuan Chengzhi's character is not well characterized. However, Yuan Chonghuan was not well written either, so in May or June 1975 another "Review of Yuan Chonghuan" was written as a supplement. The Sword of the Blood was revised quite substantially twice, adding about one-fifth of its length. The heart and soul of the revisions went into this book the most.
